The ultimate love story, a story of wit, bravery, and tragedy; the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Perhaps one of the most tragic love stories written throughout history, the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice evokes emotions from everyone and reminds readers of the importance of trust.
The meeting of Orpheus and Eurydice:
Orpheus, even as a young man, had become revered for his talent in music and poetry, so much so that crowds of all creatures would gather to hear him. In one gathering, a shy but beautiful Eurydice was drawn towards the famous Orpheus, and as soon as he laid eyes on her, he was captivated by her. Soon after they met, the two were married, surrounded by all the gods, blessed by Hymenaios, the god of marriage. But all good things must come to an end.
The snake bite and Orpheus’ plan:
Aristaeus, a shepherd entirely consumed with wanting Eurydice as his wife, decided to wait for the newlyweds to pass by, so that he could kill Orpheus and take Eurydice as his own. However, as he made his attack, Orpheus gallantly rescued Eurydice and the chase started. On and on it went. And it kept going. Aristaeus was not close to giving up. But, as they entered a field, Orpheus felt the loosened grip of Eurydice’s hand, and watched as the colour drained from her face. Naturally, he believed that Aristaeus was the culprit, but, looking down, he came to the dire realisation that Eurydice had been bitten by a deadly viper. The love of his life passed away in his arms. After her death, Orpheus formed a plan. He demanded a visit to the Underworld, and with the help of his father, Apollo, was granted time with Hades. In the Underworld, Orpheus begged, sang, and did everything in his power to get back his love. After singing and playing the lyre, Hades granted him his wife. On one condition: that he would not look back until they are both in daylight.
The tragic ending:
Orpheus, driven by love and excitement, began his journey, with the painstakingly hard task of not reaching out for Eurydice. However, when he heard her footsteps behind him and saw the light, he turned around to hug her, as he was afraid that she would not be there. But it was not to be. He watched as she was drawn back into the underworld, taken from him once again. When he had turned, she had been in the dark, and they both had to be in the light to be reunited with each other. After the tragic separation, Orpheus wandered aimlessly, alone. Soon, a group of women who were spiteful of his rejection, killed him, without any struggle from Orpheus. Eventually, his soul descended into the underworld, where he was finally reunited with his love, Eurydice.
What is the meaning of the story? Maybe that everything, including love is temporary? Perhaps that trust is a vital part of life? Or maybe the story was just a way of entertaining bored Greek children. Whatever the meaning, this story is one of the most entertaining, bringing in action, love and tragedy all in one.
