In Greek Mythology, Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades, is often depicted as a furious beast. In Book 6 of Virgil's Aeneid, Aeneas and the Sibyl had to drug Cerberus to get past him and enter the Underworld. However, in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, he is depicted as a pitiful dog that has not been allowed to play for a long time. Thus, when Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, held out a red ball to him, he obeyed, wanting the ball. This may indicate that anybody — people, animals, or mythological beings — may actually be more normal or better than we think, if given the opportunity.
